The feast is in honor of the Virgin Mary who first appeared to Juan Diego, a converted Aztec Indian, 475 years ago.

When the virgin appeared, she gave Juan Diego out-of-season roses as a sign to convince a bishop to build her a shrine in Mexico.

When Juan Diego opened the cloak to show the Bishop the roses, the now famous image of the virgin appeared. The cloth now hangs in a basilica in Mexico City.
