Chelsea,
Pros use both Canon and Nikon single-lens-reflex (SLR) digital cameras. By purchasing either of these two systems, you'll be able to upgrade lenses as you can afford them. You'll also be able to use pool lenses (expensive, big lenses owned by newspapers) if you eventually get a staff job.

Although other brands of cameras have strong selling points, they don't have the full line of accessories and lenses as these two companies provide.
