The following is a list of everything I own, want, approve or otherwise endorse. Each item has been hand-selected for its value and quality for professional photojournalists (PJs).
For folks new to this site, please read "Welcome to PhotoJournalism" to understand more about this blog.
The PJ Candy Store was designed for easy navigation. It was originally posted back in 2007. I make rare updates to the content. Always look further down on the page for "There is a newer model of this item" or "Compare with similar items." Follow the link provided there.
Each item listed is separately targeted to allow side-by-side comparisons. However, all items can be added to your personal Amazon Shopping Cart from any window (it's based on your IP address).
Pertinent posts from this blog are linked throughout the store to make your shopping experience more rewarding. These posts often explain how to select the best item for different PJs' needs or how to use the equipment listed.
Thanks and please enjoy your visit,

Nikon - Canon
Pro PJs typically carry two pro digital (dit) camera bodies. Dits reduce the overall cost of making images while accelerating the delivery of images from remote locations. Some pro shooters still use film camera bodies, but it's becoming rare. They often have a "pro-sumer" digital body as a back-up and/or for freelance gigs.
Although there are many brands, we only suggest Nikon and Canon. These two camera systems support the pros with long glass and specialty items we use. Consequently, most newspapers only offer pool equipment for one or both of these camera systems (varies from newspaper to newspaper as to which is the brand of choice).

Nikon D3
This is currently the top Nikon digital PJ body. It balances speed and megapixels.
12.1 Mp pro digital camera features nine frames-per-second at full FX resolution. Holds two CF cards. Features 51-point AF with 3D focus tracking and scene recognition. Compensation adjustments allow for ISO equivalences of 100 to 25,600 ISO.
Nikon has changed to CMOS sensor and expanded it to nearly full frame. For wide-angle shooters, this is means your 15mm is nearly 15mm. This also means 200mm is 200 instead of 300mm and the 400 is no longer a 600mm.
The camera is reported to record faster and is quieter than previous pro DSLRs.
Nikon D2XS
This is currently the top Nikon digital body. It features the most megapixels (12.4).
Nikon D2HS
Nikon D1H
This is my favorite Nikon digital PJ body. It provides speed and adequate megapixels (2.66 - not enough for magazine or most commercial work) while maintaining out-of-the-camera sharpness and high-speed light sync (up to 1/800th without a problem).
Nikon D700 (body only)
This is Nikon's "compact" professional version of the new Nikon D3 pro camera (see above). It incorporates many of the new technologies of its big brother - particularly focus, exposure controls and FX format (full frame capture). It features the pro-style round eyepiece with eyepiece curtain and side diopter. This probably helps with the FX format.
Nikon D300 DX
This is the pro-sumer version before the Nikon D3 pro camera. It incorporates many of the new technologies of its big brother - particularly focus and exposure controls as well as CMOS sensor and Mp count. I have one and plan to buy another. It creates quality images large enough for almost any client and keeps the 1.5X conversion while handling extreme light situations.
PJs accustomed to pro cameras will want the MB-D10 for vertical shots, more FPS and additional balance weight. An external storage device and/or DVD burner is a must with these larger Mp cameras.
Nikon D200
This is a "pro-sumer" version of the D2X. It provides enough megapixels for magazine work with some trade offs from the pro series bodies.
Please also see Nikon Lenses, Lighting and Accessories.
Nikon 35mm film cameras
Return to Nikon cameras
NIKON F6
Probably the final pro film body.
Nikon F100
This is the top "pro-sumer" body for film shooters. Seriously consider the power pack listed below.
Nikon FM2
If there's a nuclear explosion (EMP), this film camera still works (I'm serious). It's the best back-up camera in hostile terrains.
Nikon Nikonos V

Camera lenses are often the most expensive pieces of equipment a photographer owns. It's critical to get the highest quality optical equipment to produce the best images. Because of this, we only recommend lenses made by the actual camera manufacturer.
To learn more, please read, "Quality is all in the lens."
Nikon zoom lenses
Return to Lenses
Nikkor 17~55 f/2.8, AF-S, ED-IF, DX zoom
The essential PJ lens. PJs need to turn off "Auto-DX Crop" under "Image Area" in the D3 and D700 shooting menues.
Nikkor 70~200 f/2.8, ED-IF, DX, AF-S zoom
The other essential PJ lens.
Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8 zoom lens
This is similar to the lens above, but has all the newest technology (and price tag).
Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8G ED AF-S zoom lens
This is a "normal range" zoom. It's the middle lens for old PJ rigs.
Nikon 17-55mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S DX zoom lens
Nikon 14-24mm f/2.8G ED AF-S Nikkor wide-angle zoom lens
This lens replicates the ultra-wide views older PJs got with film. The angle allows hand-held speeds as slow as 1/15th.
Nikkor Telephoto 200~400mm f/4.0 G AF-S ED-IF VR zoom lens
The most versatile lens for wildlife photography. Great for daylight sports. A challenge for night sports, but it could work because of VR function.
Nikkor 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 zoom lens
This is a "pro-sumer" lens to cover the entire range needed with one lens while losing speed and gaining weight.

Nikon 50mm f/1.2 Nikkor AI-S
Old school and inexpensive.
Nikkor 50mm AF f/1.8 D
Nikkor 10.5mm f/2.8 Fisheye Lens
Used to make interiors look bigger
Nikon 24mm f/2.8D AF Nikkor Lens
Roughly a "normal" lens on a dit.
Nikkor 85mm f/1.4 lens
This is a fast portrait lens for mostly low-light studio work.
Nikkor 135mm f/2.0 lens
Fast and light with enough reach for "event" photographers (public relations).
Nikon 400mm f/2.8G ED AF-S Vibration Reduction (VR II) Telephoto AF Nikkor Lens
This is a sweet lens. It screams, "Pro." Use it for sports, nature, spot news and creative portraiture.
Nikon 300mm f/2.8 AF-S ED lens
Welcome to the pro world.
Nikkor 300 mm f/2.8 telephoto lens
Welcome to the expensive pro world. The VR is about $1,500 more than the non-VR version. Unless shooting from the air is common or money is no object, save the money and get a monopod
Other Nikon lenses
Return to Lenses
Nikon TC-20E II (2.0x) teleconverter
Although it's a dependent lens, one should be in each shooter's bag. It costs two stops of light, but it's small and a great addition if only for daylight use.
Nikon TC-17E II (1.7x) AF-S Teleconverter
This dependent lens works with VR AF-S and AF-I lenses. Only 1.5 stop light loss.
Nikon TC-14E II (1.4x) teleconverter
This dependent lens is preferred by sports shooters because only one stop of light is lost.
Nikon 28mm f/3.5 PC-Nikkor manual focus lens
This is a specialty lens for PJs. It's the prime lens of architectural photographers.
Micro / Macro
These are specialty lenses to non-pros. Pro PJs need a macro lens. For whatever reason, Nikon calls their macro lenses "micro" lenses. I suppose it's in keeping with the study of macro culture (everything) vs. micro culture (parts of one thing).
Nikkor 2160 105mm f/2.8 Micro Lens
Ideal portrait lens doubles as a micro. Fast and small enough to be a "go to" lens.
Nikkor 70~180 f/4.5-5.6, ED, micro IMP AF-D zoom
Nikkor 80-200mm f/2.8 macro zoom lens
Nikon 60mm f/2.8D AF Micro Nikkor Lens
This lens is Nikon's most compact micro lens and features the Close-Range Correction (CRC) system.
Nikon PK 13 - Extension tube
This tube allows closer focusing of non-macro lenses. I've used it on a 400mm before with outstanding results.

Digital video convergence is upon us. Some newspapers are currently using frame grabs from digital video cameras as the still photos for the newspaper. Current Canon high-end digital video quality is equivalent to the first generation of digital cameras.
Therefore, it's considered good enough (temporarily) for daily newspapers. The quality is expected to make significant leaps forward in coming years. Consequently, most working professionals are learning or perfecting their "platipus" skills by shooting digital video for daily newspapers.
Pulitzer Prize winner David Leeson of The Dallas Morning News has been at the leading edge of DV convergence for many years. Please read the "David Leeson interview."

Lighting filters (often called "gels") modify the color and/or intensity of light. It's common to use these filters to color balance artificial light to available light or to restrict the output of artificial light. Another use is to create theatrical moods with artificial light for illustrations.

I just got mine and already love it. It comes with a small elastic rain cover for the entire bag. It's not deep, but it's long enough for a 200mm. It's still better to add a 200mm pouch.

Vests allow fast lens changes and freedom of movement. Not as protective as other portability products. Although they help camoflage the PJ, these are often a high profile item (people immediately know you're a PJ). This is an advantage for new PJs, it's a disadvantage to PJs covering gang violence.
Domke PhoTOGS vests
These vests were designed for PJs. Mostly film shooters use vests anymore, however new PJs may opt for a vest to be easily "recognizable."

Printing
Dry Printing steps - Wet Printing steps
Return to Darkroom
Darkroom printing is where the "magic" happens. PJs can see the results of their work quickly appear in a tray of fluid.
The darkroom printing has two distinct processes. The first is a dry process. During these steps, PJs use the enlarger to expose dry paper with light from the enlarger. The exposed paper is then taken to a different area of the darkroom for the wet process.
During the wet process, exposed photosensitive paper is placed into a series of baths to develop the latent image, stop development, fix the image onto the paper and wash away the residual chemistry.
The items listed below are arranged by order of use.

Mark,
I know this list has been here a while, but please leave it all up indefinitely.
It's my shopping list, and I am slowly getting several things on it... such great info.
I'd be sorry to lose this, and all the links and posts that you wrote.
Thank you!
Scarlett
I try to update the PJ Candy Store every six months and after important equipment releases. I get a few pennies from sales. :-)
Greetings All,
Your opinions please on the Nikon D40x as a starter for PJ.
Thanks for your cooperation.
Best,
Ed
I'd need to read more about the actual sensor size of the D40x, but the 10.2 effective Mp sets off an alarm. I'd guess it's interpolating (inventing pixels) the images to increase effective size.
Just so you know, you may want to update your links as many of them are broken.
And this is such a long list! What ever happened to PJs traveling light?
The list is long to handle the "always be prepared" and "have a back-up plan" aspects of PJ. Have a crisis go bag covers traveling light (which is difficult in the digital age).
Between f/t editing and almost f/t shooting along with my other two major projects and a very cute wife... time has been short for the last two years. I'll try to cull through it after I get my first major project out the door.
I was wondering your thoughts on the Nikon D90 and the Canon 5D Mark II. Nice blog you have, and if i posted this twice sorry about that.
You should chose the best system for your needs. The body is often inexpensive compared to the lenses and accessories you'll need.
Of these two bodies, the 5D MkII has the advantage of being able to counter the Bayer interpolation if you set the resolution low enough.
Otherwise, both bodies interpolate to get higher resolution and essentially destroy the capture.
If you just wanted a "family camera" with video options, either is fine. If you plan to sell images, neither is a great option.
