Mark,
What aperture did you use for the shot of vertical guitarist? I'm asking because a fellow student told me that he prefers to shoot at F4 with his Nikon 80-200 whenever possible to keep more of the subject in focus.
Would you recommend shooting at F4 or F5.6 instead of F2.8?
Thank you,
Bay Lewis
The top guitarist image is f/5.6 at 1/500.
Speed is a bigger issue than depth of field. If you're shooting a rock, shoot f/22 on a tripod at low ISO. If you're shooting a rocket, shoot f/4 or f/2.8 to increase speed and decrease blur.
The other factor is distance from the subject. If you're close to the subject, you're more likely to have focus issues. If you're at infinity, there's no issue at all.
Unless there's an otherwise compelling reason, keep the lead eye in focus, and it'll work even at f/1.8.
