Pete plays

Pete Churton plays guitar during a Buffalo Blonde concert at the Logon C@fe in Beaumont on Saturday, May 14, 2005.

Over the years, I've heard some horror stories about photo departments at other newspapers. I always felt lucky to have avoided similar situations.

Since I moved to Beaumont, I've been asked a few times about why I chose to move here. We've already discussed the proximity to the beach and Louisiana. We've also mentioned the reasonable cost of living, forests, wildlife, excellent food, friendly folks, etc...

Tonight, I'd like to introduce y'all to the Assistant Managing Editor (A.M.E.). His name is Pete Churton. He believes in photojournalistic integrity and trusts my vision. He's been a PJ at The Beaumont Enterprise for the last 28 years. He loves it here and doesn't intend to leave.

He also plays lead guitar and secondary vocals in a rock and roll band called Buffalo Blonde. This weekend, he had a pool party at his home. It ended with an acoustic jam session under pine and palm trees of his large backyard.

So, if anyone still wonders about my decision, look at the image above and compare my boss to yours. ;-}

Enough for now,

Sounds like a cool dude. I'm jealous.

He's a good guy. There's actually lots of good folks here. The Biz editor is also in this band.

I wouldn't say cutting 250 of us in one day to raise stock prices is "voluntarily." I liked my job. I would rather have kept it.
I could be bitter about it or get on with my life and my career. If anything, I've learned a lot I wouldn't have otherwise.
What is "best" for us is not always what we want or are even prepared to have. Somehow, it was "best" I was laid off. Now it's up to me to discover how it was "best."
Christina Aguilera's song sums it up, "Thanks for making me a fighter."

Well said, Mark. Well said. DMN's loss is Beaumont's gain.

The point is that it's my gain. I must make it "best." Having a cool boss helps a lot.
